The Chaldean Oracles



The Chaldean Oracles Attributed to Zoroaster
The Chaldean Oracles, a work attributed to Zoroaster, were said to have been revealed to Julian the Theurgist, also known as the Chaldean. This work, of which only fragments are preserved, is a theosophical text in verse composed in the second century AD, that combined Platonic elements with others that were Persian or Babylonian. The Chaldean Oracles were regarded by the later Neoplatonists as a sacred text, sometimes, even above Plato himself. Proclus would have withdrawn all books from circulation except the Timaeus and the Chaldean Oracles, to prevent them from harming the uneducated. Referring to the Chaldean Oracles, the emperor Julian mentions the following, in what is generally regarded as one of his few allusions to the doctrine of the Mithraic Mysteries, And if I should also touch on the secret teachings of the Mysteries in which the Chaldean, divinely frenzied, celebrated the God of the Seven Rays, that god through whom he lifts up the souls of men, I should be saying what is unintelligible, yea wholly unintelligible to the common herd, but familiar to the happy theurgists. (Hymn to the Magna Mater, 172D).

RESENTATION
IFISC (Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems) is a joint research Institute of the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) created in 2007 building upon the former Cross-Disciplinary Physics Department of IMEDEA (Mediterranean Institute for Advance Studies) dating from 1995. Its creation foresees that important avenues of scientific development occur at the borders of established fields. As statement of purpose it aims at developing interdisciplinary and strategic research from the established practices of physicists.
By interdisciplinary research we mean the general attitude of willing to transfer knowledge, concepts and methods across the borders between well established disciplines. By strategic research we mean focusing in advanced studies in fields with strong future potential, avoiding incremental research as well as the “basic-applied” polarization. We therefore search for windows of opportunity in emerging areas beyond the traditional subjects that defined Physics in the twentieth century.
The backbone of our research that unifies, percolates, and is the basis of the rest of our activities is the study of generic phenomena in Nonlinear Physics and Complex Systems, with strong methodological components from Statistical Physics, Dynamical Systems, Computational Methods and Quantum Mechanics. From this source of concepts and ideas, the researchers face the challenge of cooperatively defining and updating specific and projects within a flexible and changing framework.

"Bell's Theorem is the collective name for a family of results, all showing the impossibility of a Local Realistic interpretation of quantum mechanics. There are variants of the Theorem with different meanings of “Local Realistic.” In John S. Bell's pioneering paper of 1964 the realism consisted in postulating in addition to the quantum state a “complete state”, which determines the results of measurements on the system, either by assigning a value to the measured quantity that is revealed by the measurement regardless of the details of the measurement procedure, or by enabling the system to elicit a definite response whenever it is measured, but a response which may depend on the macroscopic features of the experimental arrangement or even on the complete state of the system together with that arrangement. Locality is a condition on composite systems with spatially separated constituents, requiring an operator which is the product of operators associated with the individual constituents to be assigned a value which is the product of the values assigned to the factors, and requiring the value assigned to an operator associated with an individual constitutent to be independent of what is measured on any other constitutent. From his assumptions Bell proved an inequality (the prototype of “Bell's Inequality”) which is violated by the Quantum Mechanical predictions made from an entangled state of the composite system. In other variants the complete state assigns probabilities to the possible results of measurements of the operators rather than determining which result will be obtained, and nevertheless inequalities are derivable; and still other variants dispense with inequalities. The incompatibility of Local Realistic Theories with Quantum Mechanics permits adjudication by experiments, some of which are described here. Most of the dozens of experiments performed so far have favored Quantum Mechanics, but not decisively because of the “detection loophole” or the “communication loophole.” The latter has been nearly decisively blocked by a recent experiment and there is a good prospect for blocking the former. The refutation of the family of Local Realistic Theories would imply that certain peculiarities of Quantum Mechanics will remain part of our physical worldview: notably, the objective indefiniteness of properties, the indeterminacy of measurement results, and the tension between quantum nonlocality and the locality of Relativity Theory."
