Around Simulation II

Around Simulation II - Simulated Senses and the Un-Simulatable

Roughly one year ago with Jennifer Kanary Nikolova we started moderating a discussion on Yasmin about the simulation issue (“Around Simulation”). That discussion involved many people but many themes were left back. We think that this topic is pivotal in the human culture, and recently after talking with Roger Malina we decided to restart the discussion (something like an “Around Simulation II”). This time it will be focused on some issues that were previously ignored, and we think are important. There are 2 main of them:

1) The un-simulatable. Is all simulatable? Maybe not all can be simulated and there are realms that can only be partially simulated or that can’t be simulated at all. Do they exist? What are they? And why they can’t be simulated?

2) The simulation of the senses - and in particular of the other senses than sight and hearing - in the communication and artistic processes. It is an important topic, for instance in the mediated and remote communication.

The topic will be moderated by Pier Luigi Capucci and Jennifer Kanary Nikolova.

Pier Luigi Capucci
Since the early ‘80 Pier Luigi Capucci has been concerned with the communication’s studies, the new media and the art forms, and the relations among arts, sciences and technologies. Currently he is professor at the University of Urbino, at the SUPSI - University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland, at the NABA in Milan, and supervisor in the M-Node PhD Research Program of the Planetary Collegium. In 1994 he founded and directed the first italian online magazine. He is the director of Noema, a web magazine devoted to culture-sciences-technologies interrelations.

Jennifer Kanary Nikolov(a)
Jennifer’s current PhD at Plymouth University, Planetary Collegium, aims to improve psychosis simulations developed in a scientific context by suggesting a new immersive model that makes use of installation art techniques: The Labyrinth Psychotica. Jennifer is currently the main tutor of the Honours Program Art and Research, an experimental collaboration between the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and The University of Amsterdam.

Roberta Buiani
Roberta Buiani received her PhD in Communication and Cultural Studies from York University (Canada), where she completed a dissertation on the cultural significance of computer viruses and on the viral aspects of tactical media and online activism. Calling for a sustained critical analysis of science and technology, her work asks the question “why should we take the technologies we encounter on a daily basis as a given?” She published her work in Parachute, Fibreculture, Public, and The Spam Book (eds. Parikka and Sampson).

Derek Hales
Derek Hales is an architect and researcher. He works on interdisciplinary studies in culture and innovation including R&D commissions, public events and creative labs.

Ignazio Licata
Ignazio Licata is a theoretical physicist and epistemologist, Director of the Institute for Scientific Methodology for Interdisciplinary Studies (ISEM), Palermo. His work spans from foundations of Quantum Physics to Emergence theories and Complex Systems, Mind & Life Physics and Biomorphic Computing. The interest for Maturana and Varela, Bateson and Goodman works has led him to study the relationships between art and science considered as the cognitive attitude in seeing by representations of an “immersed-in-the-world” observer. On those theme he has edited “Unexpected Connections. The Science/Art Crossing”, Politi, Milan, 2009.

Živa Ljubec
Živa Ljubec is an independent architect and researcher in the intersection area of art/science/consciousness. She studied architecture at Faculty for Architecture and mathematics at Faculty
for Mathematics and Physics, both at the University of Ljubljana from which she obtained her master of architecture degree in 2004. She is currently exploring the intuitive realm, she claims is shared by artist and scientists, as a PhD Candidate at CAiiA (Centre for Advanced Inquiry in the Interactive Arts) at University of Plymouth.

David McConville
David McConville is a media artist and theorist whose work explores the potential of immersive visualization tools to expand perspectives on the nature of cognition. Combining his interests in media art, perception, ecology, and cosmography, he works with visualizations of scientific datasets and cultural imagery to create performative environments that facilitate examination of approaches to modeling knowledge. He is co-founder of the Elumenati (http://www.elumenati.com), a design and engineering firm creates custom installations for clients from art festivals to space agencies. He is also a Director of the Buckminster Fuller Institute http://www.bfi.org and a PhD candidate in the Planetary Collegium http://www.planetary-collegium.net

Clarissa Ribeiro
Clarissa Ribeiro is an architect and researcher in the area o media art who is finishing her PhD thesis at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Her MSc in Architecture was about Complexity and Design Processes in Architecture. She was a visiting research member of the CAiiA-Hub, Planetary Collegium. At the School of Communications and Arts of the University of Sao Paulo, she is a member of the Digital Poetics group. Director of The Double collective and artistic director of Instants of Metamorphosis series, in her PhD thesis she is considering and studying both, the collective practice and the work generated, as complex adaptive systems.
